In any SEO strategy we find the need to use tools to search for keywords. The problem, especially for freelancers or companies with limited budgets, is that many of them are paid.

But there are tools that allow you to do a keyword search at no cost and with very good results. In this post I present 7 of them.

What is a keyword search?
Before we dive into the keyword tools presentation, I would like to remind you what a keyword search (or keyword research) is.

It is a process that aims to identify relevant keywords to position the pages of your website in search engines, taking into account your business and the users you are targeting. The main goal is to find keywords that bring visitors and, therefore, improve our website traffic and generate conversions (registrations, purchases …).

If you want to better understand what it is and what its benefits are, I recommend this post about keyword research that we have on our blog.

10 tools to search for keywords at no cost
1. Google Keyword Planner
In my opinion, this is the most important free tool for doing keyword research, and I recommend that you use it whenever you can.

Keyword Planner tells you how many monthly searches a given keyword has on Google, depending on the country and language you select. In this way, you will be able to know if the keyword in question can bring visits or not. Logically, it does not make any sense that, for example, you work on a keyword that has 0 monthly searches, because it is clear that if no one is interested, it will not generate visits to your web page.

Keyword Planner has the added advantage of being Google’s own tool and, therefore, it is the one that provides the most reliable data on the monthly searches that a keyword has in this search engine.

Important information: There has recently been a change to the tool. While previously you could use the word planner for free to search for keywords and it gave you accurate metrics, now it only shows you a range. For example, if we search for the keyword “inbound marketing”, the tool shows the following result in Spain:

As we can see, the average of monthly searches gives us a very wide range, between 1,000 and 10,000 visits.

Therefore, to avoid this and for the Google Keyword Planner to show us accurate Bahrain Phone Number List, we need to use an account in which a campaign with Google Ads is being carried out. If so, the data shown by the tool is much more precise:

Taking into account the above, to use Keyword Planner you must follow the following steps :

Access Google’s Keyword Planner .
You will need to select an account linked to Google Ads (to see accurate data and avoid ranks).
Once the account is selected, go to “Tools and settings” → “Keyword planner”.
The tool will give us two main options:
Discover new keywords.
Check the volume of searches and forecasts.

Using the first option we can enter keywords and the word planner will show us suggestions for related words and their metrics. For example, if through this option we search for the keywords “inbound marketing”, the tool provides us with the keyword data but also related keywords.

To take advantage of this feature, you have to do the following:

Access Google’s Keyword Planner .
Select “Discover new keywords.”
Write the keyword or keywords from which you want to find new ideas. You can also write a URL, for example, of your competition or of a page that deals with similar topics.
Select in which country and in which language you want to search, and click on “Get search volume” (at this point, you must select the language of your website and the country of the users you are targeting).>
Next, a dashboard will appear with the results. You will also be told the number of monthly searches for each of these keywords.

On the other hand, by means of the second option, “Check the volume of searches and forecasts”, it shows us the data only for the keyword consulted. For it:

We must enter the keyword or keywords that we want to search.
Select “Start”.
We click on “Metric History”.
At the top we can change the “Location” from which we want to obtain the metrics.
Next, a dashboard will appear with the number of monthly searches that each of the keywords has. In addition, you will be able to obtain information at the seasonal level. That is, the number of monthly searches they receive based on the month of the year.
2. Google Trends
Google Trends is another keyword tool created by Google with a very specific objective: to know what the trend of a keyword is, that is, how your searches have evolved over time .

What is this for you? To be able to see if the trend of the word is positive and if, therefore, you are interested in using it on your website or blog. Obviously, if the trend is positive, it will be advisable to do so and, if it is not, no.

To use it you just have to follow these steps:

Access the tool .
Indicate the keyword for which you want information on which dates and in which country.
Check the results.

With Google Trends, you can also make a comparison of the trend of several keywords . It is very useful when you have doubts when choosing both keywords with different meanings and different keywords but that mean the same thing.

To access this comparison, you just have to follow the following steps:

Access Google Trends .
Search for the keyword for which you want to know the trend in the search engine and select in which country you want to see the trend and on what dates.
Click and the results will appear.
Click on “+ Compare” and add the rest of the keywords to make the comparison.

It is important to note that Google Trends only provides information on the trend of a keyword, but does not provide information on monthly searches. Therefore, once you have identified keywords that may be relevant to your website, it is recommended that you use Keyword Planner to check if they have a remarkable search volume.

My recommendation is that you also do it the other way around: if you already know the volume of searches for a keyword, it is important to look at its trend to make sure that it is a keyword that will be searched over time. In case it is not, it is better that you consider using another, even if it has fewer monthly searches.

3. Google Search Console
Google Search Console (previously, Webmaster Tools) tells you the keywords by which users are accessing your website .

This information can give you many surprises: it is possible that you have already used some of these keywords, but it may also be the case that keywords that you are not using appear. In these cases, it is recommended that you do so, because you will increase the visitors who access your page through that search.

To use Google Search Console it is necessary, first of all, to have it configured and have access. Then, you just have to follow the following steps:

Access the Google Search Console .
Select one of the properties that you have linked.
Go to the “Search results” section (previously, “Search analytics”).
Next, you will see a list of the words by which users find you. You can also view the impressions and clicks they have during a specific period. Typically, the more impressions a keyword has, the more monthly searches it has. Anyway, to confirm the information, I recommend that you go through Keyword Planner.

4. Ubersuggest
Ubersuggest is a free keyword search engine focused on finding long-tail keywords based on a keyword . Therefore, it is also useful to find new quality words to work on your website.

Using Ubersuggest is very easy and you just have to do the following:

Access Ubersuggest .
Enter the keyword from which you want to find new long-tail suggestions and select the country in which you want to find these suggestions.
See the results and select those keywords that you think may be relevant to the web page.

In addition, the tool also includes a graph with the volume of visits to “mobile” and “desktop” during the last months to be able to analyze the trend.

Like Google Trends, Ubersuggest also does not provide information about the monthly searches that a keyword has. Therefore, it will not help you to confirm if the keyword can bring visits to your website.

As a consequence, once you identify new keywords related to your business, you will also have to pass it through Keyword Planner to know the volume of monthly searches they have and through Google Trends if you want to check its trend.

5. Keyword Shitter
Keyword Shitter has exactly the same functionality as Ubersuggest, that is, it allows you to search for long-tail keywords based on the keyword entered .

Its use is also identical:

Access the tool .
Enter a keyword in the box.
Click on “Shit Keywords” and check the results.

6. Google Suggest
It is a function of Google itself that does the same as Ubersuggest and Keyword Shitter.

Simply enter a keyword in the search engine for it to show you related long-tail words and what users are searching for.

7. Found
Found is a tool that allows you to find new keywords from the combination of several words . Its main advantage is that it does the combinations automatically and therefore saves you the time of doing them manually (which could be a lot).

Imagine that you have an apartment rental business in several cities. Using this tool, for example, you could make keyword combinations such as Apartment rental + preposition + Cities.

To use this tool, you must follow the following steps:

Access Found .
Fill in the columns with the words you want to combine. You can see an example below:
search free keywords found
At the bottom, select how you want the words to be combined, then click “Concatenate” and see the results.

Found also does not provide information on monthly searches for a keyword or its trend, therefore, when you have the list of combinations you should also use Keyword Planner and Google Trends to have this information.

8. Keyword Surfer
It is a free extension that we can download in our browser and it will provide us with the volume of searches for the keywords that we search directly in the Google search engine.

We just have to download the extension and install it in the browser (currently, it is only available for Chrome) and select the language in which we want it to be displayed.

When you install the tool and perform a search in the Google search engine, it will provide us with different information:

Monthly search volume in the same search bar and your CPC.
Related key keywords in the table on the right.
A graph with the pages that receive the most traffic through search.
In each search result that appears in the browser, you provide us with 3 pieces of information:
Estimated monthly traffic in Spain of the positioned page.
The number of words on each page.
The number of times the keyword appears on the page.

9. Answer the Public
This is another tool that allows us to search for keywords for free. The operation is very similar to what we have shown in previous tools:

Access Answer The Public .
Enter the keyword that interests us.
Select the country and language in which we want to perform the search.
Click on “Search”.
The tool will show us a page with two panels: “Visualization” and “Data”. The first shows searches related to the keyword entered in a very visual way, taking into account different criteria
Questions: searches with “how”, “when”, “which”, “why”, etc.
Prepositions: searches with “to”, “how”, “to”.
Comparisons: “versus”, “or”, “and”, etc.
In the Forex Email List panel we can consult the same data in lists in each of the previous criteria.

10. Soovle
This is a very simple tool to search for long tails of keywords. We just have to enter the keywords from which we want to extract the suggestions, and the tool will show us a list with all the related keywords. In addition, clicking on any of the words that it suggests redirects us to the web where that keyword is used.

How to know if my keywords are positioned? Tools to keep track of your keywords
Now that we are clear on how to find relevant keywords for our business, we must not forget the importance of knowing if they are positioned correctly.

Having this information will help us understand which topics work best, detect relevant keywords and create related content, or determine if there is content that should be improved or updated (for example, if you receive a lot of impressions but a low level of clicks, etc.) .

Free tools to analyze keyword positioning
Once we have worked on a specific keyword, for example, writing an article on our blog, how can we know if it has been positioned in search engines?

Open SERPS
The easiest way to do it is to search for the keyword directly in the Google search engine (remember to do it with private browsing):

In this way we can easily and quickly know if a specific keyword has been positioned. However, what do we do if we want to check several keywords at the same time and we don’t want to search one by one?

There are other tools that allow us to monitor the positioning of the keywords worked:

Search Console
Search Console is a Google tool that we can use for free. Using this tool we can analyze the keywords and their position in the search engines. In addition to the average position, we can also see other relevant data, such as total clicks, impressions and CTR.

Payment tools to analyze keyword positioning
Ahrefs
It is one of the most used paid tools in SEO. Through it we can access a wide variety of data about our website or blog, among which the total number of keywords for which our website ranks in search engines stands out. That is, regardless of the specific keywords that we have worked with, Google positions other related keywords that it considers relevant, of which we may not have visibility.

MOZ
We are facing another of the essential tools for all those who manage a website. This control tool allows you to create a campaign for a specific website and add each of the keywords that we work on. Once the worked keywords have been added, the tool will keep track of their positioning in search engines and we will be able to check the variations that may occur in the positioning over time. In this way, we have visibility of the keywords that have lost positions and whose content we must review in order to improve it, and those that, on the contrary, have increased positions and are at the top of the search engines.

As we see in the graph, the number of words in each range of positions within search engines varies over time. In addition, MOZ also gives us visibility into when Google has made an algorithm change in order to determine if it could have had an impact on the positioning of our keywords.
